The Celebration of Art

If you've seen naturetech (and you should have by now, because it’s an amazing exhibition), you can see how the emergence of technology has generated a new way for artists to be creative. Miebach uses her weather charts and data and generates them into quirky 3-D works. Rinklin alters the sense of reality with bright, muddled colors and light. Samour uses mesmerizing colors and shapes to intersect the world of science, technology and the natural world. Technology is a blessing for anyone. Not only is the Fitchburg Art Museum embracing the use of technology, but many other places are too, like SXSW.

SXSW or South by Southwest is held annually, every mid-march, in Austin, Texas. The conference and festival celebrates the power of art through the convergence of music, independent films and emergence of new technologies.” Without a question, SXSW is the epitome of creativity.

At this year’s event and from what I read online, there was a theme of art and technology at the SXSW (YEAAAH!). One work that stood out to me was 3M’s LifeLab Outdoor installation.

Yeah, I know. I thought the same thing. What is it? It’s a tent! Obviously, it’s not an ordinary tent. This tent is more than that; it’s akin to being inside a kaleidoscope; exhilarating, vibrant hue of colors and breathtaking patterns. This is something very similar to what is seen at naturetech.

The tent uses a material called 3M Dichroic Film as a glass surface. It's similar to acting like a prism, and the surfaces reflect light from the tent and floor. The many shimmering colors of pallates reflect and bounce off each other to create a bright, interactive display.
