The Ghostly Crew of the Andrea Gail
Inspired, intelligent, and brilliant are all adjectives that can be used to describe any one of the
truly innovative artworks from the naturetech exhibition at the Fitchburg Art Museum.
One of the artworks that I feel truly epitomizes not only the intellect of the artist, but a
fascinating local, historical event is Nathalie Miebach’s “The Ghostly Crew of the Andrea Gail.”
For those of you not familiar with the story, the Andrea Gail was a ship lost at sea during a
devastating storm in 1991. All six men were reported dead when the ship that left Gloucester
Massachusetts was never seen nor heard of again. Even if you are not familiar with the story
of the Andrea Gail, you may be familiar with the famous book the story was the basis of, The
Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger and the 2000 film starring George Clooney and Mark
Wahlberg.
When talking one on one to Nathalie at the opening, she showed me that along with the
sculpture she constructed inspired by the Andrea Gail, there is also a song I was unfamiliar with
based on the historical event called “The Ghostly Crew.” I am personally an avid lover of music
and found it immensely interesting that there was a song dedicated to the tragic, mysterious
event.
If you get the chance to go to the exhibition, you can find the music and lyrics posted on Nathalie Miebach’s
wall of the Learning Lounge. In addition you can look at a map of the Gulf of Maine tracking the ship’s
course and the path of the unnamed hurricane just like the image above to get an idea of the actual track
the ship took and the path of the storm as well that both inspired Nathalie in the creation of her scupture.
